SUNY Adirondack Falls to Jefferson CC in Extra-Inning Heartbreaker
WATERTOWN, N.Y. —
SUNY Adirondack came up just short in a tightly contested matchup on Monday, falling 6-5 to Jefferson Community College on a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
With the game tied at five, Brooke Matys delivered the decisive blow for the Cannoneers, singling in the winning run in extra innings.
Jefferson struck early in the first inning, scoring three runs. A fielder's choice by Briana Hardwick plated the first run, followed by a two-run groundout from Layla Killino that gave the Cannoneers a 3-0 lead.
SUNY Adirondack responded in the fourth with a four-run rally. Laila Danaher grounded out to bring in a run, then Natalie Conroy delivered a two-run single to tie the game. EmmyLou Richards followed with an RBI single of her own to give the Timberwolves a 5-3 lead.
Jefferson battled back to tie it in the fifth, using a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly by Peyton Enghusen to even the score at 5-5.
In the circle, Sam Manning started for SUNY Adirondack, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits over four innings, with two strikeouts and five walks. Delaney Wiley got the start for Jefferson, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits in 3.1 innings while striking out three and walking six.
Richards led the Timberwolves offensively, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Emma Martens showed strong plate discipline, drawing two of Adirondack's six total walks. The Timberwolves also flashed the leather, turning two double plays in the field.
Matys paced the Jefferson offense from the ninth spot in the order, going 2-for-3, including the game-winner. Wiley led the Cannoneers with two walks, as Jefferson matched SUNY Adirondack's total of six walks and also turned two double plays defensively.
The Timberwolves will look to bounce back as they continue their series against Jefferson
