SUNY Adirondack Baseball Falls to Herkimer Generals in High-Scoring Affair
Queensbury, N.Y. — Despite a strong start, SUNY Adirondack Timberwolves were unable to hold onto their early lead, falling 25-13 to the Herkimer Generals on Tuesday.
The Timberwolves had an impressive offensive showing, out-hitting Herkimer 14-10, but the Generals' explosive sixth inning proved too much to overcome.
Herkimer got on the board early with a two-run first inning, thanks to a double by Shiryu Sato and a triple by Marvin Hill, followed by a passed ball and a ground out to take a 4-0 lead. However, SUNY Adirondack responded with a powerful bottom of the first, scoring six runs on eight hits to grab a 6-4 lead. Ryan Reagan's two-run single was the biggest blow in the inning.
The Timberwolves extended their lead in the second, with Christian Mikulski tripling down the left field line and scoring on a passed ball. They added more in the fourth, scoring five runs on just two hits, including a two-run single by Tommy Bishop and a double from Juan Cornelio that brought in one more run.
Unfortunately, Herkimer flipped the script in the top of the sixth inning. The Generals scored an astonishing 16 runs on just five hits, including a three-run double by Jacob Severson, to take a commanding 25-13 lead. SUNY Adirondack was unable to recover in the final innings, as Herkimer's offensive explosion proved insurmountable.
Riley Derenzo led the Timberwolves' offense with three hits on the day. Cornelio and Bishop each drove in two runs. Despite a solid start, with Caleb Nelson giving up just four earned runs in the first three and two-thirds innings, the Timberwolves were unable to contain Herkimer's potent offense.
Chase Regan earned the win for Herkimer, pitching two and one-third innings of relief, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. AJ Cowles took the loss for SUNY Adirondack, giving up four runs in just over an inning of work. Justin Peralta started for Herkimer, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits in his two innings of work.
Sato led the Generals at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Severson drove in four runs. Herkimer's patient approach at the plate also paid off, as they drew 16 walks throughout the game.
SUNY Adirondack will look to bounce back in their next game, continuing their Region III play.
